Privacy Policy

Your reports stay with your union. Nothing that identifies you ever leaves it.

This policy explains what happens to the information you send to the Union of Pinnacle Tenants (“UPT”, “we”) through our text message reporting program, Proof in Numbers.

The short version

• Your phone number and anything identifying you stays inside UPT and its technical team. It is never sold, never shared for marketing, and never given to your landlord or their agents.
• When your report is used outside that circle – in bargaining, with partner organizations, with lawyers, or publicly – it is aggregated and anonymized first. Your name, number, and unit are not part of it, even if you include that information in a report.
• Our system automatically strips out or redacts obvious personal details (e.g. your name) before your report is even read by a union admin.
• You can stop at any time by replying STOP, and you can ask us to delete your information at any time.

What we collect

• Your mobile phone number, from the sign-up form or from texting our number directly.
• Your name and building or address, if you choose to give them. Both are optional.
• The content of your reports; messages, photos, screenshots, and other media you send us.
• Your preferred language, if you tell us.
• Basic sign-up records (the page you used, timestamp, IP address, browser) kept only to show that you gave valid consent, as US telemarketing law requires.

How we use it

To run the tenant reporting program: logging the issues you report, asking follow-up questions, sending occasional check-ins on whether a problem is still unresolved, combining with other tenants' reports to identify patterns across buildings that help the union organize, negotiate, and hold management accountable.

Automatic redaction

Before your report reaches the union admin who reviews it, our system automatically looks for and removes obvious personal details. For example, names accidentally included in a message. This is an extra layer of protection, not a guarantee: automated redaction is imperfect, and admins may still see identifying details you include deliberately, such as your unit number. Send only what you're comfortable sharing with your union.

Who can see your information

During the pilot phase (August - December 2026), your reports are visible to a small number of people:

• UPT leadership, who review and follow up on reports.
• The Proof in Numbers technical team at the Anti-Eviction Mapping Project, who built and maintain the system. During the pilot they work alongside UPT to review how the system is performing, correct errors, and plan a larger evidence-gathering program.

What we never do

• We do not give your name, phone number, unit, or any identifying detail to your landlord, management, or their representatives.
• We do not sell your information.
• We do not sell or share your opt-in information or phone number with third parties for marketing purposes.
• We do not share identifiable information with any outside organization, agency, or journalist. Not in any form, not at any stage.

How your reports are used beyond the union

The value of this program comes from many tenants' experiences seen together. When reports are used outside UPT – in negotiations with management, in support of legal action, with partner housing and civil-rights organizations, or with city agencies – they are aggregated and anonymized first. That means only the pattern is shared (for example, “29 units across 2 buildings reported a similar unfinished repair”), while your name, phone number, and unit are not.

Message delivery is handled by our SMS provider, solely to send and receive your messages.

Keeping your information safe

Information is stored in secure, access-controlled systems. Records are kept in a way that preserves their integrity as evidence, and access is logged.

Keeping and deleting your information

You can ask us to delete your information or your consent record at any time; just contact us. We keep consent records for as long as US telemarketing law requires us to be able to show you agreed to receive texts. Reports may be kept in anonymized form for organizing analysis after identifying details are removed.

Stopping messages and getting help

Reply STOP to any of our texts to stop receiving them immediately. You can sign up again later if you want. Reply HELP to reach a UPT admin. Consent to receive texts is never a condition of anything else; your membership, your housing, or any assistance from the union.
